Every year in the spring I get this overwhelming urge to go camping. I love the outdoors, getting away and meeting new people. Camping is a fantastic way to do all of that and more. Camping gives me the opportunity to spend quality time with my children and grandchildren. It helps me and my husband take a “breather” from day to day trials of life. It is delightful to sit under the stars at night with a campfire and a family to enjoy. Most of the time we do not go far from our home, but in the campground you feel as if you could be anywhere.
Our family has camped in many different places over the years, but one of our favorite places is Disney’s Fort Wilderness Campground. It has been my experience that most campgrounds are family friendly, but this one rises above the rest. It is what you would expect from Disney.
Our family lives in the mid-Atlantic so we frequent places like Gettysburg, Pennsylvania and Hershey, Pennsylvania. We have made repeated visits to these incredible places and have found many fascinating and family friendly things to do.
We first started out camping in a tent, but that was not for me so we moved up to a pop up camper and I loved it! Camping in a tent is alright for some, but I have back issues and sleeping on the ground just was not good for me. The pop up, however, was much better, and we truly began to enjoy camping.
There are many different types of camping units. We got started looking for one by attending RV shows in our area and then stopping by the local dealership. Having said that, we did not buy from them. We live on a budget, so we shopped around on Craigslist and our local paper to find what we needed. We were happy to find just what we wanted in our price range. Ever since then we get “spring fever” and start camping as soon as possible. We generally camp right up to and including Halloween.
Camping is not for everyone, but if you have a young family this may be an excellent way to spend time with them. Children love to be out in nature, meeting other children and just being kids. Camping can also be less expensive than other types of getaways, but do not forget it is sometimes a lot of work, but it is worth it to me.
